Tune into Channel 4 at 9pm tonight for Saving Africa’s Witch Children, a Dispatches special.
The film tracks the work of Gary Foxcroft, Programme Director of the UK charity Stepping Stones Nigeria, and his mission to save and transform the lives of the Nigerian children who are blamed for disasters and famine, branded witches and then abandoned, tortured and murdered.
Working with the Child Rights and Rehabilitation Network in the Niger Delta, Stepping Stones Nigeria raises the money desperately needed to rescue children accused of witchcraft, give them medical treatment and help them recover from the trauma they’ve had to endure.
Stepping Stones Nigeria has set up an appeal page on Justgiving to go with the film, and all the donations made will go directly towards helping the children featured in the film, as well as countless others.

I’m reeling. Probably the most powerful documentary I’ve ever seen. How uplifting though, amongst all that horror, to see the effect of the brave and inspired trip to the Governor’s residence, that must have been an amazing moment for them all. What can we in the UK (aside from raising funds) do to help Gary and his associates? Any ideas?

Pray! and to raise funds this was set up straight after film was shown & they’ve nearly raised £10k in 4 hours, support them!

Does anyone know how to get UNICEF involved?I know they have offices in the region and can help by dispatching personnel…or otherwise…I’ve sent them some mails alerting them of the issue and recieved no feedback.
More than money, I suspect that what these kids need is a ‘lasting presence’ stratergy which will ensure that years from now,all children will still be safe from any priests or parents who are convinced that they should be destroyed.
I am also wondering…how can other kids suffering in silence be discovered and saved?

Of course these children are not devils, but they are very vulnerable to the ignorance of their parents and a society that breeds them. How do we intervene to minimize or prevent their suffering?
