That was the year that was (blogged) – part 2

Last week we reviewed the first 6 months of 2008 seen through the posts on the Justgiving blog, so now it’s time for part 2 – we know you’ve been chomping at the RSS bit in anticipation…

July:

facebook logoWho says summer is quiet? We started it off presenting our thoughts on avoiding digital divorce at 2gether08 and then moved on to the IoF National Convention, after which we grouped the thoughts of Justgiving’s Tom (and many others) on social media and charities. Gemma got some lovely praise, and we noticed an important trend change: that Facebook referrals to Justgiving were bigger than Google.

widget As well as celebrating the first birthday of our widget, we made an ill-fated (by September)  move to a new payment processor and featured a rather unique fundraising video. Justgiving’s Mike survived a skydive, and a bunch of us braved a lot of mud and rain (summertime!) to run the JP Morgan Chase corporate challenge. That all paled into insignificance against Ben Stiff, who skated from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise money for CORDA.

August:

elieWhilst our developer Elie was busy quitting smoking for charity, we made some more improvements to our infrastructure and promoted a new ITV program. Important, but not as interesting, was the information on paying charities Transitional Relief and Gift Aid.

Ryan CarsonThe story of Theo and Daisy’s big adventure cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats was coupled with the founder of Carsonified, Ryan Carson, shaving his head for AbilityNet as well as a summary of some more quirky events. But then came my favourite fundraising activity of the year – Simon Guerro, who was giving up cheese for a month for charity (complete with a truckle-load of cheesy puns).

September:

Lisa ConnellWe started the month by showcasing how to start well on Justgiving, announcing the switchover of Charity Accounts and revealing our new payment provider to be the old one. The story of Rent a Date for Charity followed a note on refunds, and we shared the slides from a presentation on Online fundraising: harnessing technology to build and maintain relationships.

Sophie, Simon and Jonathan - the bloggersThe amazing Grant Logan was featured again, this time with a Big wheelchair pull – quite a contrast with a Guitar Hero marathon also raising money through the site. Our fundraiser of the month was Kirsty Ashton, who’d raised over £70,000 for When You Wish Upon A Star. We finished with a video of where our new servers live (more interesting than it sounds) and welcomed everyone to our new blog, and our bloggers!

October:

Tom BuckleyWow, what a month. Our fundraiser of the month was Tom Buckley, who’s amazing challenge is almost at an end. We also caught up with Nick Jacques and his fundraiser son Alex, Steve Weatherley and his attempt to swim the channel, before a third interview with a fundraiser – Major Phil Packer and his goal to raise £1 million for Help for Heroes. On a sad note, we remembered Tom Clabburn, and paid tribute to Graham Lees, who died whilst on a fundraising cycle ride.

Athesit BusAn interview with our charity site of the month, BullyingUK, was followed by hints on fundraising in the credit crunch as part of blog action day. In the midst of everything, the most talked about fundraising campaign of 2008, the atheist bus campaign, took off spectacularly to raise over £100,000 in a week. After our away day, we wrote about a webinar on the Internet and Fundraising and we released our brand new Charity Support area.

November:

Charlotte HarrisAn appealing month, November, filled as it was with our advice on creating appeal pages on Justgiving after we wrote about not one, but three appeals. We saw the power of joining online fundraising with TV, ran through the online fundraising lessons to be learnt from the atheist bus campaign and revealed Charlotte Harris as our new Head of Client Services.

jm-royal-parks-runWith the changes to VAT, we had to update a lot of tech and finance systems in under a week. That effort was impressive, but not as much as the fireman taking on Antarctica for Henshaws Society for Blind People! We also interviewed the fab Dee Jackson about her fundraising efforts and got some great tips of the fundraiser of the month, Jamie Markham.

December:

Justgiving Advent CalendarAnd so to the end of the year: we started with Simon’s Justgiving edition of the 10  best ways to use Facebook to fundraise. And for this festive time, as well as putting up a Christmas tree, we created our own Advent Calendar, packed with lots of tiny tips on using Justgiving more effectively.

seb-greenWe also remembered Eileen Dallaglio, mother of former England rugby ace Lawrence, who supports a fundraising page in her honour. And finally, we finished with part 1 of That was the year that was (blogged) and another great fundraiser of the month, Seb Green.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed the review of the year, it’s certainly been a busy one at JG Towers – but we’re ready for more work and making even more improvements to the site next year. It just leaves me to wish all the fantastic users and wonderful charities who use our site a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year on behalf of the whole team at Justgiving.

That was the year that was (blogged) – part 1

Yes – it’s that time of year again when there’s not a lot to say, so we review things we’ve said throughout the year. Hold on tight for a whistle-stop tour of all things Justgiving blog-related that took place in Two Thousand and Eight (here’s the 2007 version)…

January:

old (new) homepageThe year started with posts about our new friends MOO (who are now old friends, I guess) and how people had used MOO to publicise their fundraising activities. We then announced the exciting release of a new homepage, a donation reminder function, as well as celebrating the JG birthdays of the lovely Liz and design star Kai and putting up a best practice webinar recording.

msrc logoProbably the most interesting story was how a small charity raised over £237k with Justgiving, where we relayed the fabulous success of the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre (MSRC) and their methods for raising so much money.

February:

jg insiderIn February, we helped people find their friends to sponsor with a better search and produced a new sponsorship amount screen to use once they got there. We also explained how to use RSS feeds on Justgiving, and Simon shared a video of his top 10 London Marathon Fundraising tips.

napac logo largeFor education, we promoted The National Association for People Abused in Childhood as the charity website of the month (complete with video) and showcased how they promoted online fundraising effectively. Finally, I produced possibly the worst/best pun of the year (depending on your point of view) for a story about fundraising on pancake day – when fundraising push comes to Shrove [groan].

March:

Gift Aid logoThe big news in March (how could you forget?) was that Gift Aid stayed at 28% in the Budget. However, all was not so simple once we looked at the small print and were introduced to the lovely term *Transitional Relief*. This was one of the biggest challenges for us in 2008, as we had to change so much in such a short space of time, so we’re really proud that our teams pulled together so quickly to implement a technology and finance solution.

create page buttonNow for the rest of the round-up (deep breath) – we produced a tutorial on how to badge your email signatures, highlighted three great fundraising pages, congratulated the Dotty Rhino charity on winning a bloggie, and showed how charities can use Justgiving for more than just events!

April:

flm logoBusy. That’s what April was – what with the small matter of the Record-Breaking London Marathon on Justgiving, where we enabled people to donate £1 million to charities in one day. Apparently, this was a bit like chugging, but also a great answer to the question “Is Person-to-Person Fundraising Dead, or Just Getting Started?

PF logoOn a less positive note, we apologised for an interruption to charity reports, but we got them back up as soon as we could, as well as releasing an oft-requested reporting feature. Finally, we launched a YouTube competition for marathon runners where one lucky winner received a £500 donation to their page, announced the arrival of newbie Natalie, and JG’s Tom Mansel wrote how charities could use social media in trade mag Professional Fundraising.

May:

small nom nom nom foodOn the fundraising side, we wrote about appeals for aid after the China earthquake and the Burma cyclone, the Cannonball Run Europe 2008 and an inspirational guy, Grant Logan, climbing Ben Nevis. On a lighter note, Kai and I (Jonathan), took part in an online cookery competition.

dreamforceFor charities on Justgiving, we changed the way payment reports worked and refreshed the Charity Account. I also wrote about my experiences at Dreamforce 2008, the irresistible rise in online giving and we shared a success story from Cycle India and the results of our last charity survey.

June:

MikeJune started with another urgent appeal, and moved on to the fundraising escapades of Nick from the Apprentice and our very own helpdesk hero, Mike. An update on Ben Nevis climber Grant Logan, with news of a charity foody raffle was followed by our fundraiser of the month – the amazing Nicole Dryburgh.

ipledgeOn the updates front, we released another new version of the homepage and improved the donation exit screen. As for reporting, we released an extremely popular (over 1,000 downloads!) payment report reformatter that’s helped charities manage their data. June’s summary ends with a letter published in the Evening Standard on the ‘long tail of donors‘ and a fantastic charity website of the month.

I think it’s safe to say that it’s been a pretty busy year. But that’s only part 1, look out for part 2 next week…
